If your native language is not English, it is compulsory that you
take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The test is
computerized and examines your language skills. It is comprised of
four parts: Listening Comprehension, Structure, Reading Comprehension,
Essay.
Most of the colleges and universities require a score of at
least 550 (213) points on the TOEFL.
For a Bachelor's degree you might also be required to take the Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT I/II). SAT I consists of two parts- verbal and
math. SAT II aims at defining your knowledge in specific areas. It is
only required by a limited number of universities.
For a Masters degree, you might be required to take the Graduate
Record Examination (GRE). It aims at defining the language, mathematical
and analytical skills of the applicants for the humanities. GRE
subject is a test on a specific subject. Some universities require a
given level of expertise in the subject you are applying for.
GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a test for applicants from
business majors. It examines the language and mathematical skills of
the applicant but in addition there are two analytical essays included.
TSE (Test of Spoken English)- This test is only for people who will
teach in the universities they are applying to. It measures
their skills in spoken English.
