States.
At all American universities, the academic year starts during August or
September. In some them, however you might be able to start in
January.
Your preparation for the application process should begin at least
1-1.5 years before the respective semester you want to start your studies
at.
Correspondence with universities /colleges:

Prepare a list of universities to which you want to apply to (January -
April '0X) -use our order form to select your "best"
university/college
- Send a letter to these universities, asking for an application package
(May '0X). Use our sample letters
- Fill in the forms and all the documents required by the universities. Send
back the application package to the universities (no later than December

- Check university catalogues for entrance requirements tests (GRE, GMAT, SAT,
TOEFL, etc) you need to take (January '0X)
- Get a bulletin for the test (January '0X)
- Check the date when you have to register to take the tests (January
'0X)
- Register for the tests on the appropriate date
